Following are some camping tips.  This is a work in progress.  At this time it is not meant to cover all aspects of camping but to provide some answers to commonly asked questions.

New to Camping

So your son has got you involved in scouting and camping up to now has been a motel room.  Well do not worry.  One of the advantages of camping with us is that you can start with a minimal investment (allow you to check out the water before you dive in.)  Please be sure to check with your den leader or any of the pack leaders if you have any questions.  The only risk you run by asking is you may be there awhile because the only thing we love more than talking about camping is camping itself.

Supplies you need

Rain gear - This can be a poncho or a rain coat and pants.
Flashlight (extra batteries)
Lantern - Battery (wait until you are sure before investing in a gas).
Walking shoes

The following items the pack can supply if needed.

Sleeping bag
Camping mattress (foam, air mattress, camping pad, etc.)
Tent

Please note, the pack wants you to go camping.  If you need any help we will do whatever it takes to make sure you have the necessary equipment and that you have a good experience.  Please ask if you have questions.

Buying a sleeping bag

The nice thing about camping in Texas is the weather swings from below zero to over a 100.  A sleeping bag rated to 40 degrees should be fine.  If it is going to be colder when we go camping you can add a liner which adds about 10 degrees to the sleeping bag.  Mummy sleeping bags will keep you warmer but they don't allow you to wiggle around very easily.

In addition to a sleeping bag you will also want a pad.  Pads range from air mattresses (if you get one be sure you also get a pump) to blue foam pads (just a little softer than hard dirt).  Foam pads work great until they get wet.

Buying a tent

Well you have a family of four and there is a tent that sleeps four.  Perfect you think.  Well, we know there is a lot of love within our scouting families but unless you think sleeping like sardines is the closeness you are looking for, you'll probably want to get something a little bigger.  Rules of thumb vary from 1.5 to 2 times at a minimum (6 man tent for 4 up to 8 man tent for 4).  If you want room to change in etc. you may even want to go larger.  Keep in mind that are campouts are family camp outs and not back packing expeditions.  Before buying your first tent, check with your den leader or any pack leader so they can assist you with defining how big and what type of tent you want.  A good tent will last you through all your Cub Scout and Webelo years and then some, make that first purchase count.

Flashlights

What decision is there to make buying a flashlight you ask.  This is really an easy decision but one thing you may want to consider is the headlamps for your child.  They are about twice as expensive as the mini-mag flashlights, but after your child has lost 3 flashlights they start to look pretty good.

Lantern

I got a flashlight so why do I need a lantern you ask?  Well flashlights work great when walking around, etc.  But a lantern will work wonders in the tent.  Please do NOT use a gas lantern in the tent.

Rain Gear

A good rain coat may cost a little more money but will last many years.  Problem is your child is growing faster than weeds.  Any decent rain gear will work.  Rain coat and pants should be purchased.  Ponchos either are great or not so great depending on who you talk too.  When you are camping is not the time to take chances with rain gear.  Always (no matter what the weather man says) bring rain gear.

Walking Shoes

You probably already have a pair that are perfect for this.  You will need two pairs.  It is always good to have two pairs of shoes for camping.  Even if you don't join the hike, you will have the opportunity to do a lot of walking.  They don't have to be heavy duty hiking shoes, just comfortable.  Keep in mind the shoes you wear around the camp site will get dirty.

Final Comment

What about stoves, cups, plates, etc.  These things are all needed for camping but if you are new to camping do not worry.  We will have plenty.  Come camping with us and you will get to see a lot of different camping equipment which will help you with any future camping equipment purchases.

Lastly, a comment from one of our cub scout moms after her first camp out.  "I love camping and can not wait to go again!"
